What is Hooked On Phonics?
According to their website, “Hooked on Phonics uses a proven, fun method to teach critical reading skills. Developed by leading educators, each session takes just 20 minutes or less.”
Each session starts with watching a fun video where the new sounds and letters are introduced. Following that, students use a workbook to reinforce the new sounds and letters that were introduced in the video.
Next, students read a short story book which includes the words and sounds that they have learned. These stories also include some comprehension questions which you can use to check your child’s / student’s understanding of the story.

Our Review Of Hooked On Phonics
We found Hooked on Phonics to be incredibly fun and engaging for young learners who are starting to read.
We really liked the online app which is very colorful and engaging and displays the different levels that the student has progressed through. This is great for tracking progress and also rewarding and praising the students for their progress.
We also really loved the variety of different resources Hooked on Phonics provides. Learning phonics just from a worksheet or a book can quickly get a little repetitive for children. The combination of the lesson videos, workbooks, and stories helps to keep students interested and engaged in the lesson.
We especially loved the videos in the Hooked On Phonics app, many of which are more like a game, which students really enjoyed and wanted to watch over and over again.
The thing we loved the most about Hooked on Phonics was the price. At just $1 for the first month, it gives you a risk-free way to try it out and after the month you can cancel at any time.
To sum up, we would highly recommend giving Hooked on Phonics a try. Whether it’s through an online subscription or through their books on Amazon, Hooked on Phonics is a fantastic way to help your child or students learn how to read.
