Can
Can is one of the most common modal verbs in English. It is used to talk about ability, ask for permission, and make requests. For example, you can say “I can swim” to talk about ability, “Can I open the window?” to ask for permission, or “Can you help me?” to make a request.
Could
Could is often used to talk about ability in the past, but it is also commonly used to make polite requests. For example, “I could ride a bike when I was six” describes past ability, while “Could you pass me the salt, please?” is a polite request.
May
May is used to ask for permission in a polite or formal way. It can also be used to talk about possibility. For example, “May I ask a question?” asks for permission, while “It may rain later today” shows that something is possible.
Might
Might is used to talk about possibility when you are not certain something is true or will happen. For example, “She might be at home” means it is possible she is there, while “He might have forgotten his keys” shows a possible explanation for something that happened in the past.
Must
Must is used to show necessity, obligation, or that something is required. The negative form, must not (mustn’t), means something is not allowed. For example, “You must wear a seatbelt” shows a rule, “We must finish our homework tonight” shows an obligation, and “You mustn’t smoke here” means smoking is forbidden.
