Present Simple Tense Exercises

Practice the present simple tense with these interactive exercises. Below, you’ll find four activities to practice both positive and negative present simple sentences. The first two focus on the verb be, as this is one of the most common verbs in English, and the other two focus on using other verbs in the present simple tense.

Present Simple Exercise – Be Verb (Positive)

Choose the correct form of the verb be (am, is, or are) to complete the present simple sentences.
Remember: I → am, He/She/It → is, You/We/They → are.

Present Simple Exercise – Be Verb (Negative)

Drag and drop the correct negative form of the verb be (am not, is not, are not) to complete the present simple sentences. Remember: I → am not, He/She/It → is not, You/We/They → are not.

Present Simple Exercise – All Verbs (Positive)

Type the correct present simple form of the verb in each sentence.
Remember, with he, she, and it you add -s or -es to the verb (e.g. he plays, she watches),
but with I, you, we, and they you use the base form (e.g. I play, they watch).

Present Simple Exercise – All Verbs (Negative)

Read the positive sentence and choose the correct negative form. For example: I live in LondonI don’t live in London. Remember, in the present simple negative, we use don’t with I, you, we, and they, and doesn’t with he, she, and it. The main verb stays in the base form.
