Opposite Words Game – How to Play

To play, show the video to your students. In each round, students see a picture and a word. First, have them listen and repeat the word, then try to guess the opposite word before the 5-second timer runs out. You can pause the video at any time if students need more time to think or discuss their answers.

There are several ways to play this game in class to make it more engaging. Here are a few approaches that work well:

  • Whole-Class Warm-Up – If you’re using this game to introduce or review opposite words, have students call out the answer or raise their hand as soon as they know it.
  • Group Work – Put students into small groups and give each group a set of opposite-word flashcards. Place all the flashcards face down. When it’s time to guess, groups race to find the correct flashcard and hold it up. Fastest group wins.
  • Pair Game – Give each pair of students a set of flashcards and have them spread them out randomly on their desks. Students place their hands on their heads, and when it’s time to answer, they race to grab the correct card before their partner. This version can get very energetic, so set clear ground rules beforehand to keep the game safe and fair.
