What Am I? Quiz – Fun Jobs and Occupations Game

Help your ESL students confidently review and master Jobs and Occupations vocabulary with this engaging “What Am I?” video quiz! Designed for young learners and beginner-level students, this fun, no-prep activity challenges students to read clues and guess the profession before the timer runs out. It’s an excellent way to boost vocabulary recall while learning about different jobs in context.

How to Play: Teacher’s Guide

The aim of the game is simple. Students will read three sentences (clues) and then try to guess the job being described before the time runs out. To make the most out of this engaging activity in your class, follow these steps:

Before You Play:

  • Pre-teach or review vocabulary: Students need some prior knowledge of jobs and occupations vocabulary to fully enjoy this game. Make sure you pre-teach or review the names of professions with your students before you start. Consider using flashcards, brainstorming, or quick visuals to activate their knowledge.
  • Explain the game rules: This activity can be played in several different ways, so make sure you explain your chosen game rules clearly before you begin. For example, you might want to put students in pairs or small teams to answer, or simply have them raise their hand to guess. Clarify how answers will be given and whether points will be awarded.

During the Game:

  • Read the clues aloud: When the clues appear on the screen, read the sentences out loud. This can be done by you as the teacher or together as a class. This is especially important for beginner learners who might struggle to read and understand the clues without assistance.
  • Pause the video after each question: After all clues have been read for a round, pause the video to give students enough time to think and write down their answer or discuss it with their team.
  • Ask students for their guess: Once students are ready, prompt them to share their guess before you press play to reveal the answer.

After the Game:

  • Award points: After all 10 rounds, check answers and award points if you’re playing competitively. The student or team with the most points wins.
  • Review and reinforce: Finally, review the job names they learned today. You can quickly go through them one more time to reinforce the vocabulary and solidify their learning. Consider asking follow-up questions like “Which job was the most challenging to guess?” or “Which job sounds the most interesting?”
