Giving Directions PPT

This free Giving Directions PowerPoint teaches students how to ask for and give directions in English. The slideshow introduces key expressions such as “Where is the bank?”, “Go straight”, “Turn left”, “Turn right”, “Next to”, and “Between.” It’s ideal for helping beginner ESL students practice giving and following directions.

How to Use This Directions PowerPoint in Class

Start the presentation and work through the first slides teaching the key expressions: go straight, turn right, turn left, on the right, on the left, next to, and between. Practice until students are confident using them, then move on to the next slides, which show a map and introduce one block and two blocks. This is the way directions are often taught in beginner ESL workbooks.

Once students are familiar with the key phrases, the PowerPoint presents simple questions such as “Where is the bank?” or “Where is the post office?” At this stage, students have the language they need to start asking and answering about directions.

To practice giving directions, the slideshow provides a map. Model sentences like “Go straight two blocks and turn left. It’s on your right.” Have students repeat and then practice on their own until they are confident.

The presentation finishes with a speaking activity using a larger map with various buildings. Students choose a starting point and ask their partner “Where is the…?” Their partner responds with full directions, for example: “Go straight three blocks and turn right. It’s on your left.”
