Family Members Game

Family Members Game – Fun Quiz Activity for Learning Family Vocabulary

This Family Members Game is a fun video activity for reviewing family vocabulary with beginner English learners. In each round, students hear a simple definition like “My mother’s sister is my…” and must choose the correct answer from two options. It’s a great way to help students understand family relationships and practice using the correct terms in context. Use this game as a quick and engaging review at the end of your lesson on family members.

How to Play the Family Members Game

The game is simple. Students will read a clue like “My father’s brother is my…” and must figure out which family member it refers to. After each clue, they see two possible answers and choose the correct one before the time runs out.

There are a few different ways you can use this activity in class. Here are some options that I find work well:

  • Whole class activity – Use this game as a quick review at the end of your lesson. Have students shout out the answer or raise their hands to guess.
  • Team game – Divide the class into teams and give each team a small whiteboard. After each clue, pause the video and let students discuss and write their answer. Then have teams hold up their boards to check.
  • Writing Practice – Pause the video after each clue and have students write out the full sentence. For example: “My mother’s mother is my grandmother.”

Other Family-Themed Resources to Use in Class

If you’re planning a full lesson or unit on family vocabulary, these resources pair well with the video activity above. Use them to reinforce the key terms, support speaking and writing practice, or introduce the topic before playing the game.
