Sleeping Penguins – PowerPoint Game
This Sleeping Penguins PowerPoint Game is a fun way to practice reading, writing, and spelling with young learners. Students work together in teams of four, with each teammate seeing just one part of the sentence. They must then share their words and race to write the full sentence correctly. Download the free template below and keep reading for step-by-step instructions and tips on how to use this game in class.
How to Play Sleeping Penguins
- Divide the class into groups of four and number the students 1–4.
- All students “go to sleep” by closing their eyes.
- Call out “Number 1.” Those students open their eyes, look at the word on the screen, then go back to sleep.
- Repeat with Numbers 2, 3, and 4 so each student has seen one word.
- When all four have looked, say “Wake up!” Students open their eyes, share their words, and work together to form the sentence.
- The first team to write the sentence correctly (spelling and punctuation included) wins the round.
Tips for Playing
- Practice the routine first: Before starting, run a quick trial round of “go to sleep” and “wake up” so students get used to the sequence. Call “Number 1 wake up,” “Number 2 wake up,” etc. to check that everyone understands before the game begins.
- Rotate the writer: Change who writes the sentence each round. For example, in the first round, all Number 1 students write, then in the next round, all Number 2 students, and so on. This way, everyone practices writing, everyone helps, and it prevents fights over the pen.
- Signal finished answers safely: Have teams clap twice and place their hands on their heads once they’ve finished writing. This avoids students holding up whiteboards too early and accidentally bumping classmates.
