Free “How Much Is It?” PowerPoint for ESL Lessons

This free PowerPoint teaches money vocabulary and the question “How much is it?” Students learn how to ask about prices and practice answering with numbers in English, and will review with a fun Guess the Price Game. The colorful slides and simple language make it ideal for lessons teaching kids and beginner ESL students.

How to Use This “How Much Is It?” PowerPoint

Begin the presentation and use the slides to teach money vocabulary, such as one dollar, two dollars, three dollars, all the way up to one hundred dollars. Work through each slide and have students repeat after you until they are confident with the numbers.

If your students are not used to U.S. dollars (for example, if you are teaching in Korea or Japan), it can help to show them how much one U.S. dollar is in their local currency. This makes the lesson more meaningful and will also come in handy later when they play the price guessing game.

Once students are comfortable with the amounts, introduce the target expression “How much is it?” and practice answering with different prices: “It’s five dollars” or “It’s one hundred dollars.” Go through several examples until students can respond fluently.

At the end of the presentation, play the Guess the Price Game. Students will see an item on the slide and be asked “How much is it?” Three possible prices are shown, and they must guess the correct one. There are several ways you can play:

  • Have students raise their hand to guess.
  • Take a class vote: “Who thinks it’s $1?” / “Who thinks it’s $5?”
  • Put students in pairs or small teams and have them write down their answer.
  • Assign three areas of the classroom, one for each price, and have students move to the correct spot to show their guess.

Remember to always ask “How much is it?” before revealing the answer, so students get repeated practice using the question and full-sentence responses.
