Ideas for Using These Flashcards

  • Sorting on the Board
After introducing countable and uncountable nouns, mix up all 16 flashcards and give one to each student. One by one, students come to the board and place their card under the correct heading: Countable or Uncountable.
  • Find Your Group
Hand out one small flashcard to each student. Students decide whether their noun is countable or uncountable and then find classmates with the same type. They form two groups: one with all the countable nouns and one with all the uncountable nouns.
  • Sentence Challenge
Write a sentence frame with a blank on the board, such as โ€œI have three (____).โ€ Show the flashcards one at a time and ask students whether the word fits. For example, apple and chair work, but sand or water do not. Try different frames to practice grammar points like a/an, some, much, many, and a few/a little.
