Free Phonics Flashcards for Teaching Kids Letter Sounds

Looking for printable phonics flashcards to support your students as they learn to read? This page includes two flashcard sets to help kids build essential early reading skills. The first set features A to Z phonics flashcards for teaching initial letter sounds (like a-a-apple, b-b-ball, etc). The second set focuses on CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant) to help students begin reading simple words.

Each set comes in both large and small sizes, so you can use them in a variety of ways, such as classroom displays or fun phonics games. For example, the large flashcards are perfect for creating a classroom phonics wall display, which can be especially helpful for young learners who are just beginning to learn the alphabet and letter sounds.

Phonics Flashcards A to Z

This set of printable phonics flashcards includes 26 cards, each representing a letter of the alphabet and a picture that starts with that letter sound. For example, a โ€“ apple, b โ€“ ball, c โ€“ cat, and so on. The set includes large cards for classroom presentation or wall displays, and small cards for student games and individual practice.

Activity Ideas with These A to Z Flashcards

I really love teaching phonics because there are so many fun games you can play to help kids practice. Here are some of my favorite games to play with these A to Z phonics flashcards:

  • Whatโ€™s Missing?
This activity is perfect for helping students recall the letter sounds they just learned. After practicing 5โ€“10 letter sounds, place those flashcards on the board and have students close their eyes. Then, remove one or two cards. When they open their eyes, students guess which cards are missing.
  • Stand Up, Line Up
Give each student a small flashcard. Then ask, โ€œWhatโ€™s the first letter?โ€ (A). The student with that card stands up and comes to the front. Continue with B, C, and so on, until students are lined up in alphabetical order. Starting with letter A, each student says their card (e.g., a-a-apple), and the class repeats it. After saying their word, the student sits down. To make it more exciting, try again and challenge the class to go faster next round. This game gives students lots of practice saying the initial sounds and reinforces the alphabet sequence.

Phonics Flashcards CVC Words

This set features 30 flashcards covering simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words using each of the five short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u). Example words include cat, bed, pig, dog, and sun. Each card displays a CVC word alongside a clear, engaging image to support early reading comprehension and vocabulary building. As with the Aโ€“Z set, these CVC flashcards come in large and small versions.

Activity Ideas with These CVC Flashcards

CVC flashcards are great for beginner readers, and there are lots of simple games you can play to help students build their reading skills. Here are two easy games that always work well in class:

  • Line Bingo
This is a fun way to practice listening skills and CVC word recognition. Give each student or pair of students a set of 8 small CVC flashcards. Have them place their cards in a line in any order they choose. Then call out a CVC word. If the word is at either end of the line, students can flip that card over. If itโ€™s in the middle, they leave it. The first student or pair to turn over all their cards is the winner. Tip: To encourage speaking, have students say the word aloud each time they flip a card.
  • Noughts and Crosses
This simple game is easy to adapt for phonics practice. Place 9 CVC flashcards on the board in a 3ร—3 grid. Divide the class into two teams: one is X, the other is O. Teams take turns choosing a flashcard and saying the word aloud. Then, mark an X or O next to that card. The first team to get three in a row wins. You can refresh the grid and play again using different flashcards to keep the game going.
