Short A CVC Word Families

When I teach CVC words, I like to focus on one vowel sound at a time. I usually start with short A word families because beginner readers tend to find them the easiest to blend and decode. Below you’ll find PowerPoints for seven short A CVC word families, including -at, -an, -ad, -ap, -ab, -am, and -ag. Click on the word family below to download the PPT.

Short E CVC Word Families

Next, we have 4 PowerPoints covering the short E CVC word families -et, -ed, -en, and -eg. I find that students often confuse the short A and short E vowel sounds at first, so before teaching these word families I usually review the two sounds with simple drills such as ‘a-a-apple’ and ‘e-e-elephant’ to help students hear the difference. When teaching short E CVC words, it can also help to compare similar words such as pan and pen so students can clearly hear the difference between the two vowel sounds.

Short I CVC Word Families

Just like with the short A and short E vowel sounds, I find students can sometimes confuse the short I sound as well, so I usually start by reviewing the vowel sounds A, E, and I — ‘a-a-apple’, ‘e-e-elephant’, and ‘i-i-igloo’. While teaching short I CVC words, I also often swap out the middle vowel sounds (pan, pen, pin, for example) so students can hear the difference and practice saying the different vowel sounds.
