A PowerPoint for teaching hobbies in English.

Free Hobbies PowerPoint – ESL Lesson for Beginners

This free Hobbies PowerPoint is designed to introduce vocabulary about hobbies in English. The slideshow presents common hobbies with clear pictures and words, making it ideal for teaching kids and beginner ESL students. It can be used in lessons teaching expressions such as “What’s your hobby?” and “What do you do in your spare time?” along with responses like “I like to…”

Inside This Hobbies PowerPoint

Students will first learn the names of 18 common hobbies: playing the guitar, playing the piano, playing the violin, reading, writing, painting, hiking, cycling, playing tennis, bowling, fishing, shopping, playing computer games, cooking, photography, surfing, dancing, and blogging.

After learning the vocabulary, students will practice answering the question “What’s your hobby?” by using the words on the slides, for example, “I like hiking.”

Extending the Hobbies PowerPoint With Activities

Once students are confident with the vocabulary, you can extend the lesson with speaking activities that encourage more interaction:

  • Ask Your Partner – Students work in pairs and ask each other, “What’s your hobby?” They then report back to the class using the third person, for example, “He likes fishing” or “She likes painting.” This activity is great for practicing both questions and third-person singular forms.
  • Class Survey – Prepare a simple table with students’ names and a blank space next to each one. Each student chooses one hobby, then walks around the class asking, “What’s your hobby?” and filling in their chart with classmates’ answers. At the end, all students should have a completed table. The teacher can then ask questions like, “What does Kelly like to do?” or “What is Chris’ hobby?” This activity works well for reviewing and reinforces speaking, listening, and note-taking.

These activities build on the vocabulary introduced in the slideshow and give students more chances to practice in a fun and communicative way.
