Fun Ways to Use These Preposition Flashcards

Teaching prepositions with these flashcards can be a lot of fun. Here are some good activities you can try:

  • Preposition Simon Says
Give each student a pencil and a book. While showing the flashcards, start giving simple commands like “Put your pencil on your book” or “Put your pencil under your book.” Once students are familiar with the prepositions, introduce the “Teacher says” rule. Students should only follow the command if you say “Teacher says.” For example, “Teacher says, put your pencil next to your book.” If a student follows a command without hearing “Teacher says,” they are out or lose a point. Tip: To practice speaking as well as listening, after each round, ask, “Where is the pencil?” and have students respond with sentences like “It’s on the book.”
  • Preposition Partners
This is a fun speaking activity you can play using the small flashcards. Give one card to each student and tell them not to show it to anyone. Students walk around the classroom asking, “Where is the dog?” and answering based on their card, for example, “It’s in the box.” If a student finds someone with the same card, they go together to the teacher. The teacher can then ask them again, “Where is the dog?” before collecting the cards. The pair can then sit down. Once all students have found their partner, start a new round using a different question like “Where is the monkey?” or “Where is the gorilla?”
